    When truth is trapped in a doom loop of fake news, propaganda, and censorship, journalism needs to cut through the noise. For exiled media, this challenge is even sharper. Far away from their home audiences and forced to navigate hostile environments, they must get creative. To reach people in new and unexpected ways, journalists are rethinking formats, exploring alternative platforms, and breaking out of the hard-news mold – turning to culture, art, satire or performance.
    This EXILE TALK is a one-night-only talk show that dives into the hybrid zones between (pop) culture and hard news – where news meets art, headlines meet hype, and storytelling crosses borders into pop culture, performance, and subversion. Together with a diverse lineup of guests, we’ll explore how journalistic content can take on new forms – and where the lines blur (or clash) between pop culture, artistic expression, and (exiled) journalism.

    Attacks on justices, bans on public protests, and crackdowns on independent media – these are just a few chapters from the authoritarian playbook. While not all are used everywhere, recent developments in countries like Russia, Turkey, and the United States raise urgent questions. In this edition of Exile Talks, we’ll explore:

    What do authoritarian practices look like in different political systems?
    How do history, institutional structures, and political culture shape both repression and resistance?
    Can autocrats seize control of any democracy?
    And how resilient is German democracy in the face of these threats?
    We’ll hear from a Turkish exile journalist, a Russian journalist in exile, and an expert from the DGAP (German Council on Foreign Relations) about the evolving realities of authoritarianism. From Turkey’s repression of opposition to Russia’s suppression of civil society and the U.S. democratic backslide, our speakers will highlight alarming cross-border patterns.

    Join us for an essential discussion on the growing threats to democracy, the importance of exiled voices, and how we can resist.

    For three years, Ukrainian journalists have been operating under extreme conditions: covering the Russian invasion, facing targeted attacks, and struggling with financial uncertainty. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, 13 journalists have been killed, 47 wounded, and 18 Ukrainian journalists remain imprisoned in Russia (Reporters without Borders/Institute of Mass Information). Despite these immense challenges, independent media in Ukraine continue to report, countering disinformation and ensuring that the voices of millions—both within Ukraine and abroad—are heard.

    Award-winning journalists Katerina Sergatskova and Roman Stepanovych, co-founders of Zaborona Media and the 2402 Foundation, will share their firsthand experiences.

    Seit einem Vierteljahrhundert verfolgt der russische Präsident Wladimir Putin seine imperialen Machtfantasien. Kriegsverbrechen und Morde pflastern seinen Weg. Freiheit und Bürgerrechte sind in Russland zu leeren Worthülsen verkommen. Die russische Medienlandschaft wurde gleichgeschaltet, der Rechtsstaat von Putin und seinem Zirkel aus Geheimdienstlern und Kleptokraten untergraben, während politische Gegner inhaftiert oder getötet werden. Auf dem Weg zu einem russischen Großreich baut Putin seine Einflusssphäre in Europa aus – mit Desinformationsattacken, durch das Stärken extremistischer Parteien und über die anhaltende Abhängigkeit europäischer Staaten von russischem Öl und Gas.

    Der Krieg in der Ukraine wird über das Schicksal Europas entscheiden. Ob unsere Demokratie gegen Putins autoritäres Regime bestehen kann, diskutiert CORRECTIV-Reporter Marcus Bensmann („EuropasBrandstifter“) mit der Politologin, Expertin für Desinformation und Buchautorin Susanne Spahn („Das Russland-Netzwerk“) sowie mit Nora Pohl (CORRECTIV.Exile), die ihre Erkenntnisse aus der Arbeit mit Exiljournalistinnen und -journalisten einbringen wird.

    Seit Beginn des russischen Angriffskrieges gegen die Ukraine investiert der Kreml massiv in Propaganda, um die öffentliche Meinung in den USA und Europa zu beeinflussen. Mit gezielten Strategien wie der „Doppelgänger-Kampagne“ und der Unterstützung pro-russischer Influencer verbreitet Russland Narrative und Falschinformationen, die selbst nach ihrer Enttarnung oft eine nachhaltige Wirkung entfalten.

    Ein aktuelles Beispiel ist die annullierte Präsidentschaftswahl in Rumänien: Ein bis dahin relativ unbekannter Kandidat gewann überraschend die erste Wahlrunde – unterstützt durch eine von Russland initiierte TikTok-Kampagne. Auch in den USA hat der Kreml nachweislich Desinformationen eingesetzt, um Donald Trump zu stärken. Nun werden ähnliche Strategien im deutschen Wahlkampf sichtbar.

    Die neueste CORRECTIV-Recherche zeigt, wie Russland moderne Technologien nutzt, um manipulierte Inhalte zu erstellen. Mithilfe von Deepfake-Videos und Künstlicher Intelligenz entstehen täuschend echt wirkende Fälschungen, die das Vertrauen der Öffentlichkeit untergraben und Meinungen gezielt beeinflussen sollen.
