Kitchen Talks x Exile Talks: Narratives on Migration in German Media

    12. November um 18:00 20:00 in Berlin

Migration is still very often framed in German media through the lenses of crisis, integration, or threat. These narratives shape public opinion and the political climate we live in. In this discussion, we will reflect on how these narratives emerge inside German media and newsrooms and how alternative storytelling can challenge the status quo and open space for more nuanced, inclusive coverage that can reshape public debates and contribute to a more cohesive and informed society.

Join Shammi Haque (CORRECTIV), Rebecca Roth and a third speaker (tbc) for a discussion, hosted by CORRECTIV.Exile and n-ost.

Exile Talks Cologne: Stories of South Sudan

    20. November um 19:00 in Köln

South Sudan—the world’s youngest country—is also one of the most dangerous places for journalists. Since independence in 2011, political violence, corruption, and repression have driven many reporters and writers into exile. In this conversation, writer Stella Gaitano and journalist Joseph Oduha discuss leaving South Sudan, working from exile, and what it means to stay connected to a country you can no longer live in. Moderated by Sham Jaff (what happened last week).

Join us for the discussion and stay afterward for snacks, drinks, and conversations.

Exile Talks: Live from Europe’s Shrinking Newsrooms – Cases of Hungary, Serbia, Slovakia

    16. Oktober um 19:00 21:00 in Berlin

Across Central Europe, press freedom is under siege. In Hungary, political control strangles independent voices. Serbian journalists face systematic intimidation. Slovakia’s independent media and civil society face systematic attacks.
These aren’t isolated incidents—they’re coordinated campaigns by authoritarian leaders desperate to secure their grip on power, knowing that criminal trials and accountability await many of them once they lose control.

Join us for an urgent conversation with frontline defenders of press freedom from Serbia, Hungary, and Slovakia. This episode of Exile Talks is organized in cooperation with the Friedrich Naumann Stiftung.

Exile Talks: Journalism, Art and the Power of Storytelling

    24. Juni um 19:00 21:00 in Berlin

When truth is trapped in a doom loop of fake news, propaganda, and censorship, journalism needs to cut through the noise. For exiled media, this challenge is even sharper. Far away from their home audiences and forced to navigate hostile environments, they must get creative. To reach people in new and unexpected ways, journalists are rethinking formats, exploring alternative platforms, and breaking out of the hard-news mold – turning to culture, art, satire or performance.
This EXILE TALK is a one-night-only talk show that dives into the hybrid zones between (pop) culture and hard news – where news meets art, headlines meet hype, and storytelling crosses borders into pop culture, performance, and subversion. Together with a diverse lineup of guests, we’ll explore how journalistic content can take on new forms – and where the lines blur (or clash) between pop culture, artistic expression, and (exiled) journalism.

Exile Talks: The Authoritarian Playbook – Lessons from Russia, Turkey and the US

    24. April um 19:00 in Berlin

Attacks on justices, bans on public protests, and crackdowns on independent media – these are just a few chapters from the authoritarian playbook. While not all are used everywhere, recent developments in countries like Russia, Turkey, and the United States raise urgent questions. In this edition of Exile Talks, we’ll explore:

What do authoritarian practices look like in different political systems?
How do history, institutional structures, and political culture shape both repression and resistance?
Can autocrats seize control of any democracy?
And how resilient is German democracy in the face of these threats?
We’ll hear from a Turkish exile journalist, a Russian journalist in exile, and an expert from the DGAP (German Council on Foreign Relations) about the evolving realities of authoritarianism. From Turkey’s repression of opposition to Russia’s suppression of civil society and the U.S. democratic backslide, our speakers will highlight alarming cross-border patterns.

Join us for an essential discussion on the growing threats to democracy, the importance of exiled voices, and how we can resist.

    Speakers
Can Dündar, Turkish journalist, documentary filmmaker and author, editor-in-chief of ÖZGÜRÜZ
Sergey Lukashevsky, Russian historian, human rights activist and editor-in-chief of exile media Radio Sakharov
Rachel Tausendfreund, Senior Research Fellow with a focus on Transatlantic Relations/USA at DGAP (German Council on Foreign Relations)

The discussion will be moderated by Viera Zuborova, director of CORRECTIV.Exile.

This event is part of the monthly “Exile Talks” series, which brings the expertise and experiences of exiled journalists and media professionals to the stage. The event is financially supported by Bratislava Policy Institute and ERASMUS+.
